چکیده

Sensory-motor relationships are part of the normal operation of sensory systems. Sensing occurs in the context of active sensor movement, which in turn influences sensory processing. We address such a process in the rat olfactory system. Through recordings of the diaphragm electromyogram (EMG), we monitored the motor output of the respiratory circuit involved in sniffing behavior, simultaneously with the local field potential (LFP) of the olfactory bulb (OB) in rats moving freely in a familiar environment, where they display a wide range of respiratory frequencies. We show that the OB LFP represents the sniff cycle with high reliability at every sniff frequency and can therefore be used to study the neural representation of motor drive in a sensory cortex.

Olfactory Bulb Field Potentials and Respiration in Sleep-Wake States of Mice

It is well established that local field potentials (LFP) in the rodent olfactory bulb (OB) follow respiration. This respiration-related rhythm (RR) in OB depends on nasal air flow, indicating that it is conveyed by sensory inputs from the nasal epithelium. Recently RR was found outside the olfactory system, suggesting that it plays a role in organizing distributed network activity. It is theref...

Hippocampal Respiration-Driven Rhythm Distinct from Theta Oscillations in Awake Mice.

UNLABELLED We have recently described a slow oscillation in the hippocampus of urethane-anesthetized mice, which couples to nasal respiration and is clearly distinct from co-occurring theta oscillations. Here we set out to investigate whether such type of patterned network activity, which we named "hippocampal respiration rhythm" (HRR), also occurs in awake mice. In freely moving mice, instanta...

Selective entrainment of gamma subbands by different slow network oscillations.

Theta oscillations (4-12 Hz) are thought to provide a common temporal reference for the exchange of information among distant brain networks. On the other hand, faster gamma-frequency oscillations (30-160 Hz) nested within theta cycles are believed to underlie local information processing. Whether oscillatory coupling between global and local oscillations, as showcased by theta-gamma coupling, ...

Odor- and state-dependent olfactory tubercle local field potential dynamics in awake rats.

The olfactory tubercle (OT), a trilaminar structure located in the basal forebrain of mammals, is thought to play an important role in olfaction. While evidence has accumulated regarding the contributions of the OT to odor information processing, studies exploring the role of the OT in olfaction in awake animals remain unavailable. In the present study, we begin to address this void through mul...

State-dependent coherences between the olfactory bulbs for delta and theta oscillations.

Correlations of neuronal oscillations in different brain regions are closely related to a variety of brain functions. The delta and theta oscillations in the olfactory bulb (OB), coupled with respiration rhythm, could play important roles in olfactory tasks. The correlations between the two OBs, however, are largely unknown. By simultaneously recording local field potentials from the OBs, we fo...
